..We are well into the first quarter of our year, and while the news of the world and the economy is full of doom and gloom, all seems to be well at “Paws & Hearts.” We continue to attract new volunteer teams that are out in the community making their weekly visits.
I have always found the visits that I make to Eisenhower Medical Center and the Lucy Curci Cancer Center to be incredibly humbling. How can we compare the riches of our lives to the challenges facing the patients we visit? Life is a journey with a start a middle and an end. With Animal Assisted Therapy we generally are visiting folks who are in the ‘ending’ journey of their lives, and I always try to think of how far my journey has come and what the future holds as I talk with these folks.
As volunteers we all share a brief moment with the patients and we hope that our Canine Ambassadors bring a little happiness and relief into their lives. For myself, when a patient says to me, ‘you made my day’ I’m not sure if they are aware of the fact that they actually made my day by allowing me to visit with them. Richard Waxman |
